The team is headed by communication ministry joint secretary Narayan Prasad Sanjel. nnnn GOVT.STARTING PNEUMONIA VACCINATION PROGRAMME Kathmandu, 12 May: The government is preparing to introduce pneumococcal vaccine to fight pneumonia , a major killer of children in the country, The Kathmandu Post reports.. According to officials at the Child Health Division (CHD) under the Department of Health Services (DoHS), they have been coordinating with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), a global health partnership of public and private sector organisations that works for immunisation. CHD Director Dr Tara Nath Pokhrel said GAVI has committed to supply the required doses of the vaccine s in the country. The vaccine will be administered to children aged between 12 to 18 months. The Ministry of Health and Population estimates that pneumonia , a lung infection caused by bacteria or viruses, kills over 10,000 children every year in Nepal. Currently, the government has been providing nine vaccine s to the newborn. Children are inoculated with the BCG vaccine that protects them from tuberculosis right after their birth. Similarly, the pentavalent vaccine , inoculated 45 days after the birth, is a combination of five vaccine s that protects children from five diseases, including diphtheria, tetanus and hepatitis-B. Also administered are vaccine s against polio and measles. And the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is given to children older than two years in 30 high risk districts. Meanwhile, the government is inoculating babies with rubella vaccine , along with the vaccine against measles, under the routine immunisation programme from July 15 this year. According to a study conducted by the DoHS from 2004-2009, there were 3,710 confirmed rubella cases and more than 95 percent of the afflicted were below 15 years of age. Government records show that around 1,400 children are born with disabilities in the country due to the disease every year. All the vaccine s, except the pentavalent vaccine which has being provided by the GAVI till 2015, are procured by the government . According to the Nepal Demographic Health Survey (2011), 87 percent of children are immunised in the country. nnnn
