UML PRESSURE TO RELEASE ARRETED SUPPORTER
Kathmandu, 2 July: In what
could be described as the latest example of political patronisation of unlawful
activities, the CPN-UML is mounting
pressure on local police and the administration in Siraha to
release two of its cadres who had manhandled the district education officer in
his own office a few
days ago, Rambabu Yadv writes in The Himalayan Times from
Siraha.
On Thursday, a group led by UML Siraha district committee member Pramod Yadav assaulted DEO Dilip Thakur, saying ‘action needed to be initiated’ against Thakur. Police the following day arrested Rajesh Yadav, Siraha Area No 3 chairman of Youth Association Nepal, Bishal Singh, secretary, and Shabhu Yadav, member. YAN is the youth wing of UML.
Though in a complaint filed with police, four persons’ names were mentioned, police had charged only three with public offences. However, police have not arrested UML district committee member Pramod Yadav, who led the team that attacked the government employee.
“We are facing pressure from UML leaders to release those who have been arrested. Forget about arresting the district committee member,” said an official at the district police office seeking anonymity.
YAN Siraha chairperson Rabindra Shah, however, accused DEO Thakur of trying to frame his friends on false charges because they had reached the office in order to learn about the irregularities and corruption. “If the arrested persons are not released at the earliest, we will launch stern protests,” he warned.
UML district committee member Yadav, on his part, termed the attack an ‘action against DEO Thakur’ as he in capacity of a civil servant ‘had failed to carry out his responsibilities properly’. “We will take such actions in future as well if civil servants fail to perform their duties, and nobody can stop us from doing this,” he said, making a mockery of the rule of law.
Following the attack on Thakur, the district education office has remained shut since Friday, as the staff have demanded legal action against those involved.
“I was recently transferred here. That day I was in a meeting when they called me out and started beating me up, asking why I did not answer the phone,” DEO Thakur said, adding that he will not take back the case he filed on Friday against the four attackers. He denied charges of irregularities.
When asked why police have failed to arrest Pramod Yadav, DSP Manoj Neupane only said, “The attackers will be brought to book once the investigation is completed.”
