SHRESTHA DEAD

Kathmandu, 15 Aug.: Former Prime Minister Marich Man Sngh Shrestha died Thursday morning.

He died while undergoing treatment for lung cancer at Norvic Hospital

where he was admitted  one day earlier  after being discharged by a New

Delho hospital.

Shrestha was suffering lung cancer.

His last rites are being conducted at Pashuptinath Aryaghat Thursday.

He was former chairman of Rashtriya Panchayat.

Shrestha headed a government when India’s Rajiv Gandhi government

imposed a crippling 17-month blockade of land-locked in 1989

THe government Shrestha headed  attempted to ensure  essential suuulies

during the blockade.

He ensured supply oF POL products duruig the blockade even by

flying POL products from countries other than India/.

POL products were available but not easily.

Indian blockade was not entirely effective.

‘As long as there are corrupt officials on both sides of the border, blockade is not an effective policy to push objectives,” the popular opinion then indicated.

Shrestha was a school teacher from Salyan and held various ministerial

posts in the panchayat regime and was considered a politician with a clean image..
