PROPOSAL FOR TRADING POWER
Kathmandu, 6 Aug.: Chinese power promoters
have showed interest to trade power with Nepal developing cascade project in Nepal’s bordering area, Yoges Pokhrel writes in The Rising Nepal..
At a time when the country is suffering from perennial power shortage, the
power exporting proposal received from the Chinese company would have immense significance.
Nepal is currently importing power from India to make up the deficit. Nepal imported up to 190 MW power from the southern neighbour this year.
The country has power deficit of about 300 MW in the rainy season and about 500 MW in the dry season.
Zhejian Huangshanxi Hydropower Company Limited, a Chinese private sector power developer, has expressed its interest to develop four cascade projects of 182 MW in Boqu (Bhotekoshi, in Tibet, Chinese part) and export to Nepal.
Visiting Chinese team led by the company chair had a preliminary discussion on the issue at the Ministry of Energy today.
During the meeting, the team said that Boqu River’s three hydropower stations have total installed capacity of 182 MW with the annual generating capacity of 1.058 billion KW/h.
The plant’s distance from Kathmandu will be just 71 km away.
The company had submitted a preliminary study report of the project to the MoE and said that the export of power to Nepal was well convenient as it was just 71 km far from Kathmandu.
“In terms of transmission distance and capacity, we plan to apply a double-circuit transmission line (220kv) connected to the transmission grid of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA),” the report said.
Owing to installed capacity of 80 M, the fourth cascade hydropower station uses a single-circuit transmission line (220 KV).
The first and the third hydropower stations have total installed capacity of 102 MW and use a single circuit transmission line (220 KV).
As the domestic hydropower projects have been suffering from various obstructions, the power exporting proposal received from the Chinese company may help to cope with the existing power outage in the country in the near future.
The company has over 20 years of hydropower developing experience and developed projects with total installed capacity of more than 43 MW so far.
