EC summons top leaders; other details

Kathmandu, 31 March: Maoist Amid speculation the 10 April election will be postponed for the third time, Chairman Prachanda will discuss the controversial vote with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal later Monday.
Prachanda held discussions with Nepal Sunday after CPN (Maoist) cancelled all previously announced programmes of the Maoist chief to address election rallies outside the Valley for security reasons and threat to his life.
CPN-UML Leader KP Sharma Oli and Congress leader Bal Bahadur KC charged they survived murderous attacks by Maoists during campaigning.
CPN-UML has suspended campaigning in Nuwakot and Dolakha after Maoist threats.
Election Commission (EC) has summoned Prime Minister Koirala, Nepal and Prachanda for election-related discussions Monday.
The top leaders were summoned after Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel returned to the capital Sunday after completing an inspection tour of districts.
The EC summoned the top leaders concluding meaningful elections can’t be conducted, Tarun reports.
They will be warned election can’t take place if violations of the election code of conduct and clashes aren’t immediately stopped, the newspaper reported.
Clashes during campaigning are daily occurrences election is only 10 days away.
A published report which hasn’t been denied said Home Minister Krishna Prasad Shitaula has proposed holding the one-day election in two phases increasing violence.
DEUBA
Maoists Sunday attacked former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba while he was returning to base from a campaign in Dandeldhura.
Deuba escaped unhurt.
Maoists call hill regions their base area where they deny rivals entry.

Parsuram Rai dead

Kathmandu, 31 March: Top central RPP candidate from Bhojpur Parsuram Rai died Monday morning after protracted illness.
He was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital; he was undergoing treatment for a stomach ailment.

New chief at Standard Chartered Bank

Kathmandu, 31 March: Neeraj Swaroop has been unanimously appointed chairman of Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Ltd by the board’s 235th meeting.
Swaroop succeeds Jaspal Singh Bindra who has been appointed CEO Asia of the bank.
