Kathmandu, 19 March: Top Maoist leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai said Maoist charged for crimes during the people’s war are immune from prosecution under terms of a peace accord with the government even as the UN warned abuses cannot go unpunished.
The supreme court ordered Kavre district administration to take up murder charge against Maoist politburo member Agni Sapkota for the murder of Arjun Bahadur Lama during the insurgency.
Sapkota is contesting the 10 April assembly election; the supreme court also ordered local administration to initiate murder charge against another Maoist Suryaman Dong, another election candidate.
Lama’s wife asked for supreme court intervention when the district police refused to accept murder charge after a government, Maoist peace accord.
Maoists claim serious charges against Maoists under the terms of the peace treaty will be withdrawn.
UN has protested such a provision to be incorporated in a proposed government-sponsored Truth and Reconciliation bill designed to pardon Maoists for serious crimes.
Maoists demand immunity from prosecution while demanding action for excesses by the royal regime for 17 months after 1 February 2005.
Sapkota also heads a committee or government of Tamsaling.
The committee ,in a statement, charged the murder charge during election was an’ attempt to disrupt election and the peace process’. Instigated by ‘NGOs under protection of political parties.’
CPN (Maoist) also blamed the supreme court for going ‘against the spirit of the peace process’ and ‘defaming’ Maoists ahead of elections.
