Shailendra Raj Sharma dead

Kathmandu, 10 March: Shailendra Raj Sharma, 60, died after a protracted illness, his family announced.
Sharma headed the mountaineering section in the Ministry of Tourism when Dr Harkha Gurung was tourism minister immediately after the ministy was formed during King Birendra’s reign.
Sharma handled expeditions climbing Nepal’s Himalayan peaks, including the world’s tallest Mount Everest, as leader of the mountaineering section in the ministry.
At the ministry, Sharma came into contact with top climbers of the world,including Sir Edmund Hillary and Italy’s Reinhold Messner; he was secretary of Nepal Mountaineering Association when Kumar Khadga Buckram Shah headed it.
Sharma ably led a team consisting of Prachanda Pradhan, Shyam Quinkel and Kalpana.
Sharma was only an under secretary in government service but served as director general of the Department of Tourism and was chief of operations at Radio Nepal and Tribhuvan International Airport.

Japan returns Nepal’s top woman athlete

Kathmandu, 10 March: Japan has sent back Nepal’s top woman athlete Kanchi Maya Koju.
She went missing in Japan where she had gone to participate in the 11th International Amateur Athletics Federation World Championship from 21 August to 2 September 2007, published reports said.
She went missing even before the events began.
