Suspended NRB governor found guilty

Kathmandu, 17 March: The supreme court Tuesday convicted Nepal Rashtra Bank Governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai of corruption along with Chief Executive Officer Upendra Man Pradhan.
The single bench convicted them in a Rs 25.4 million project funded by the World Bank which wasn’t consulted.
An anti-corruption body had filed corruption charges against the two officials.
A special referred the case to the supreme court after a split decision.

51 Tibetans arrested

Kathmandu, 17 March: Tibetan refugees Tuesday continued their anti-China protests demanding UN intervene to stop what they called Chinese oppression in Tibet.
Fifty-one refugees were arrested as they clashed again with police in front of the UN office where they staged a sit-in.
Ten Tibetans also staged hunger at another point.
UN in Nepal said police used excessive force in putting down earlier demonstrations.
There are more than an estimated 17,000 Tibetan refugees in Nepal.
Meanwhile, Nepal and Chin have reinforced checks and surveillance at Kodari on the Nepal-Tibet overland border road crossing following violence and unrest in Tibet.

China lodges protest

Kathmandu, 17 March: China has asked the government of Nepal to ensure that ‘Free Tibet’ or anti-China groups do not find their base in Nepal, news front reports.
The protest with a clear warning that such activities will go against the ’traditional and friendly ties’ since ages between the two countries, was lodged by the Chinese embassy.
