Kathmandu, 10 April: Voting in the tarai is progressing amid a strike called by armed rebel groups protesting elections and demanding independence.
Altogether 17.6 million people are eligible to cast their ballots through 22,000 booths.
Fifty-five parties are contesting.
For the first time, Nepalis can cast two ballots—one for the candidate and one for a party.
People accustomed to vote in parliamentary elections, will be confused.
First result of direct elections are expected Friday.
Direct and indirect elections are being for the 601-member assembly.
Chairman Prachanda voted in Bharatpur for the first time in 28 years under heavy security.
Electronic voting is taking place in Kathmandu-1.
