Graves of imperialists, feudals being dug in Nepal
By Bhola B Rana
Kathmandu, 8 April: Maoist leader Dr Baburam Bhattarao said Tuesday Maoist victory in assembly elections will dig graves of feudals and imperialists in Nepal.
“Maoists will win because they are the main catalyst for change,” Bhattarai said.
No party is expected to win a majority in the 601-member constituent assembly; 245 candidates are being directly elected.
A majority is needed not to form a government to replace a seven-party alliance led by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala but to draft a constitution of the party's choice.
Maoists are pushing for a French-style powerful presidential system of which Prachanda should be the immediate president opposed by Congress and CPN-UML pushing for a parliamentary system with a strong prime minister.
Bhattarai again questioned the role of international observers in elections; Election Commission hasn’t issued passes to the National Human Rights Commission which was critical of the national election body.
“There’s a danger of observers working as agents of imperialists against the revolution,” he said in an interview with mouthpiece Janadesh.
Bhattarai charged CPN-UML for working at behest of ‘imperialists’ and didn’t come to an electoral adjustment with Maoists.
He charged CPN-UML were telling world capitals the party wasn’t a communist organization and ‘is buttering them’ without working with CPN (Maoist).
“Our victory will dig the grave of imperialists along with feudals,” he said.
Former US President Jimmy Carter began observation work Tuesday morning by meeting election officials and will hold discussions later in the day with prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.
