Security council calls for progress on fundamental issues

Kathmandu, 24 Oct: The Ambassadors of the permanent five members of the Security Council (China, France, the UK, US and Russia) met Friday to discuss progress on Nepal’s peace process ahead of the Nepal visit of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the British embassy said on behalf of the ambassadors..
UNMIN Chief Ian Martin briefed them on recent political developments and the activities of UNMIN in support of the peace process.

The Ambassadors noted the importance of on-going discussions among the political parties on a range of fundamental issues.
With the perspective of the imminent visit of the Secretary General and the end of the UNMIN mandate in January 2009, they called on the parties to agree to deliver early concrete progress on fundamental issues.
“The issues include the discharge of unverified combatants and a rationalisation of the arms and armies monitoring.
“They reiterated their support for Nepal’s peace process and their commitment to working with the Government of Nepal to provide appropriate support both bilaterally and through the UN.” the embassy said.
