UN Congo peacekeepers, including Nepalis, told to use force

Kathmandu, 6 Nov: Peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Nepalis, have been asked by the United Nations to use force to stop the takeover of provincial capital Goma by rebel forces.
The force was previously only assigned to maintain the fragile truce between government and rebel forces.
Nepali peacekeepers from Nepal Army are deployed in Sudan as well.
Visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this month sought with government deployment of additional peacekeepers in the troubled African nations of Chad and Somalia.

Prachanda sides with rebel Kiran faction

Kathmandu, 6 Nov: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dalal Prachanda has sided with the rebel ‘hardline’ faction in an an intra-party debate with ‘soft liners’, Arun Baral reports in Janaastha.
In a recent oral report to the central committee now circulated in the party for internal debate Prachanda said,” In the changed political context, it’s essential to move ahead in the changed political context, in a rebellious manner and to make strategic counterattack against feudalism and imperialism a success to complete a new people’s revolution.”
The Prachanda circular calls for a ‘new national army’, new ‘people’s constitution’ and ‘new procedure for economic development’ for an immediate new work plan.
The fight against imperialism and expansionism in the main agenda of the new programme.
“Four prepared procedures’ have been adopted for drafting the constitution without specifying them.
A party national meeting is being held from 20 to 25 November [previously scheduled for 10 November and postponed after internal differences on declaration of people’s republic].
Six written proposals presented by five central leaders will be discussed at the national meet of workers.
Mohan Baidya Kiran, considered a hardliner, has presented his own proposal.
The meeting for the first will appoint a member-secretary to work on the direction of the chairman or vice-chairman; no other communist party has such a position.

RPP-Nepal opposes name change

Kathmandu, 6 Nov: RPP-Nepal has accused government for attempting to obliterate history by giving new names towns Wednesday to settlements named after three former kings.
The towns were named after Prithvi Narayan Shah the Great, Trivhuban and Mahendra.
Prithvi Narayan, the party said, founded modern Nepal, Tribhuban was …e and Mahendra was a nationalist.
The party, still rooting for monarchy, asked the Maoist-led government to overturn its cabinet decision.
