Tourist arrivals declines five percent in May

Kathmandu, 2 June: Tourist arrivals decreased five percent in May compared to the same month the previous year, Immigration Office said.
Only 25,129 arrivals were recor4ded at the country’s only international airport at Kathmandu in May..

Arrivals from SAARC region declined 12.7 percent.
“In May this year, the Indian market considered as a major market, showed a decline of 13.6%. Similarly, arrivals from Bangladesh and Pakistan have witnessed negative growth of 4.2% and 17.9%, respectively,” the immigration office said.
But Chinese arrivals have increased by 36.2% along with Thailand (87.8%) and Singapore (65.1%).

European markets registered overall positive growth by 9.1 percent. Arrivals from the UK was up 11.1 percent and Italy has also posted a significant increase by 24 percent..

Arrivals from Australia, Canada and United States of America have registered positive growth of 7.6 percent 8.5 percent and 4.4 percent respectively.


A total of 33,351 foreign tourists departed from TIA in May 2009. The number of Nepalese arrivals stood at 41,324 while 46,543 Nepalese departed from TIA in May 2009.
