Controversy mildewed grains distributed by WFP spread diarrhea in far and mid-West

By Bhola B Rana

Kathmandu, 5 Aug: A raging controversy has erupted over spread of deadly diarrhea and cholera by distribution of inedible grains by World Food Programme (WFP).
How will you feel when WFP of the UN is distributing mildewed grains? How have people survived eating such rice? Naya Patrika asks while reporting from Nepalgunj.
Rice has coagulated in Jajarkot with the distribution of such rice, the newspaper said.
NGO Sanjal has asked government and the National Human Rights Commission to investigate the distribution of such grains.
“Such rice and lentils don’t cook even two hours after cooking,” locals said.
WFP and WHO have denied the reports.
“Rice, lentils or oil can’t be the cause for the spread of this disease,” they said in a statement.” The disease is spread by drinking contaminated water or neglect of hygienic conditions.”
Informal Service Center (INSEC) President Subod Raj Pyaukhrel claimed that the WFP kept rice and food in the open places for months. The distribution of such damaged food-stuff has led to the spread of diarrhea among the people in the district [Jajarkot], The Rising Nepal reports.
WFP has still been storing the food-stuff in open places at Dasera, Gurkakot, Chaukha of Ragda and Nayekdada.
Pyakhurel urged the concerned authority to carry out investigation to fund out the truth about the causes behind the outbreak of the epidemic.
Government has put the death toll in three months at 235 while other reports said more than 300 persons have died.
Army has launched searches of isolated houses on hilltops to flush our the sick who are still dying.
Meanwhile, National Health Research Council has established a camp at Surkhet to ascertain causes for the epidemic.
