Commendable initiative of NHRC
By Bhola B Rana
Kathmandu, 5 Aug: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
Tuesday took a commendable initiative to take up a non-political subject as an important human rights issue.
The NHRC pointed out government and UN agency shortcomings in handling the deadly diarrhea/cholera epidemic that has claimed more than 300 lives in three months in the mid and far-West.
International and national human rights organizations has so far only been prioritizing political rights only as human rights issues.
Right to basic health facilities and food are basic human rights anywhere in the world ignored by western human rights organizations.
NHRC highlighted the plight of people in the far-West when UN agencies like WFP and WHO denied credible reports the epidemic was also triggered by contaminated grains distributed by the world agencies.
The NHRC took up a non-political human rights issue for the first time even as a tussle continues to end mandate of some UN agencies pursuing purely political issues in Nepal.
Such agencies entered Nepal by defaming NHRC.
