Landslide kills 12 in Dandeldhura

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: A landslide in Dandeldhura killed 12 persons in Dandeldhura Tuesday morning.
The landslide at three in the morning engulfed two house sin a village in the far-West district.
The landslide was triggered by incessant rains since Sunday.
Two persons were rescued.

200 plus APF personnel suffer food poisoning

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Two hundred plus armed police force (APF) personnel suffered food poisoning Monday evening at their base in Maisthan, Mohottari, police said.
Police vomited and fainted after having their evening meal at three canteens.
They are being treated at two hospitals in Mohottari and Dhanusha.
Eighty-five policemen were admitted to Janakpur Zonal Hospital for treatment.

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Tulsi Das, central leader of Jwala Singh group of Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha, was arrested from his home in Mohottari by police Tuesday morning.
Jwala Singh group is the most violent group operating in the terai.

Prachanda meeting Chinese President Hu

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Maoist Chairman Prachanda is visiting China from 11 October on the invitation of Communist party of China, Kantipur reports.
Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, International Department Chief Krishna Bahadur Mahara and the chairman’s son Prakash, are accompanying Prachanda.
Prachanda is scheduled to meet President Hu Jintao.

Settlement office for Gurkhas at British embassy

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: A Gurkha settlement office is being established at the British embassy to assist British Gurkha ex-servicemen and their dependents considering settlement in Great Britain, British embassy said.
“The role of the office is to provide essential information to prepare British Gurkha ex-servicemen and their eligible dependents for life in the UK,” an embassy announcement said.

Flood hits Kailali, Kanchanpur

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Floods hit Kanchanpur and Kailali where a child was swept away by a flooded river overnight.
Ten percent of paddy crop has been damaged by incessant rains since Sunday in the far-West districts.
Many towns and villages are inundated.

Eight Nepali-speaking people killed in Assam

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Indian armed rebel group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) shot dead eight Nepali-speaking villagers at Bishwanath-4 Bhimija village in Assam, Kantipur reports.
NDFD, declared a terrorist organization by the Indian government, indiscriminately shot dead the villagers Sunday, according to Dil Bahadur Limbu, chairman of All Assam Gurkha Student Union.
The village is inhabited by Nepali-speaking people.
They were shot dead not giving extortion money and informing local administration.
This is the first time so many Nepali-speaking people have been killed.

Girija Prasad Koirala again in controversy

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Octogenarian Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala is again in the limelight in his Nepali Congress party and outside as well amid claims he was offered to lead a new government by Chairman Prachanda.
The offer was reportedly made Sunday when the two met at a religious function at the home Lokman Singh Karki, chief secretary during the royal regime.
“Girijababu and Prachanda met at an odd place. I have received information Dahal offered Koirala the prime minister’s post there.
“Maoists have concluded Congress is power hungry and have used the last weapon. It’ll be a big mistake of Koirala topples the mechanism created by him,” Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of MJFL Bijaya Kumar Gachedhar said Monday.
Energy Minister and Congress central leader Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat also claimed Monday Prachanda offered the prime minister’s post to Koirala in a bid to split Nepali Congress.
“The party won’t get entangled in the Maoist plot to split the Congress. Maoists have thrown a card by using the Congress as in the past when they acted similarly with the king,” Minister Mahat said.
Prachanda and Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal held discussions Monday two days before parliament meets after a dasain recess; Maoists have been obstructing parliamentary sessions for the last four months.
The annual budget has to be approved next week if a national crisis is to be averted.
Congress President Koirala has said three parties must come to an agreement before Wednesday’s parliamentary session.
After meeting Nepal, Prachanda said,” A political eclipse will end soon.”
The Maoist chairman also dismissed claims he asked Koirala to lead a new government.
“The rumours are untrue,” Prachanda said.
Koirala was earlier embroiled in a controversy in the party by pushing the candidacy of daughter Sujata Koirala by elevating her from foreign minister to deputy prime minister.

Nepal ranks 144 in UN report

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Nepal ranks 144 among 182 countries in the latest UN Human Development Index (HDI) report released Monday.
Nepal is ahead of Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the South Asian region and behind Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, India and Pakistan.
Norway tops the list.
The index is based on criteria like life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and GDP per capita.

Nepal loses to Lebanon

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Lebanon beat Nepal 1-0 in the first match of the AFC U-16 Group match in the capital Monday.
Ali Saad scored the solitary goal for Lebanon.
Bahrain plays Tajikistan Tuesday.

NSP officials appointed

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Pitambar Timilshina and Amar Chandra Anil have been appointed vice-president and treasurer of National Sports Council (NSC) respectively.
Government earlier appointed them board members of the council.
