IIE Report: 29.6% rise in Nepali students in U.S. universities
Kathmandu, 17 Nov: The number of Nepali students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education increased from 8,936 to 11,581 in 2008/09 a 29.6% increase over the 2007/08 academic year, according to Open Doors 2009, the annual report on international academic mobility published by the Institute of International Education (IIE) with support from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State.
This was stated in a news release of the US embassy.
Nepal ranks 11th among the leading countries of origin of international students, as it did the last year. In the academic year 2006/2007, Nepal ranked 13th among the countries of origin of international students. India tops the list with 15.4% followed by China with 14.7%.

According to U.S. Embassy Kathmandu’s Counselor for Public Affairs Terry J. White, “America’s nearly 3,000 accredited schools of higher education continue to attract new students in what is becoming a highly competitive international ‘market’ around the world. The U.S. remains the preferred destination for students from Nepal who want to study abroad because of the quality and prestige associated with an American degree. ” Another contributing factor is greater access to comprehensive and accurate information about study in the U.S. through EducationUSA advising offices in Nepal and an increased level activity by United States colleges and universities to attract students from Nepal.

US Ambassador to Nepal



Kathmandu, 17 Nov: President Barack Obama has appointed Scott H. DeLisi, ambassador to Nepal.
As a 28 year career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Scott H. DeLisi has served as Ambassador to the State of Eritrea and as Deputy Chief of Mission of the American Embassy in Gaborone, Botswana, US embassy said
Currently Mr. DeLisi is the Director of Career Development and Assignments in the State Department's Bureau of Human Resources where he has played a key role in the staffing of embassies. This has included missions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Previously, as the Director for Entry Level Programs, Mr. DeLisi was responsible for the training, placement and career development of 600 new entrants and over 2500 existing Foreign Service Officers. Mr. DeLisi has also served as Director for Southern African Affairs, Vice Counsel for the Embassy in India, the Chief of Political Section in Sri Lanka, in addition to other postings in Madagascar and Pakistan. A native of Minnesota, Mr. DeLisi holds both a B.A. and J.D. from the University of Minnesota.
DeLisi succeeds Nancy J. Powell.

Three persons injured in bombing

Kathmandu, 17 Nov: Three persons were injured overnight when a group bombed the house of journalist Padam Thapa in Bhimdutta municipality in Kanchanpur.
The father of the journalist was among the injured.
