Parliament to discuss amendment bill to extend CA tenure

Kathmandu, 24 May: Parliament begins debate Monday on an 8th amendment bill to the interim constitution to extend the tenure of the constituent assembly (CA) for one year.
The two-year mandate given by people to CA ends Friday without promulgating a constitution to institutionalize a republic announced by an unelected and self-appointed parliament.
Parliament and not the people as touted will enforce a constitution should it now be drafted by an assembly whose term will be extended by parliament.
Voting of the bill is expected Friday.
Main opposition Maoists Sunday registered a notice in parliament oposing the government bill.
UCPN (Maoist) central committee is expected announce its decision Monday whether to vote for or against the bill.
Meanwhile, ruling party NC and UML leaders met for discussions Monday morning at the prime minister’s residence on how to handle the debate and impending constitutional and political crisis.
The bill can’t be passed without Maoist support..
A supreme court bench Sunday didn’t issue a stay order to stay the government extension bid after a writ was filed challenging the legality of the government action.
