OHCHR tenure extended by one year 9BREAKING NEWS; govt. bows down to western govt. pressures

By Bhola B Rana

Kathmandu, 6 June: Government succumbed to intense Western government pressures and extended the tenure of Geneva-based OHCHR for one year until 9 June 2011 Sunday.
The UN body overseeing human rights had pressed for a two–year extension after entering Nepal during the royal regime by defaming national institutions.
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) charged OHCHR usurpation of responsibilities asking government to limit the UN body’s role to empowering NHRC.
Human rights situation hasn’t improved with its presence though the level of atrocities has come down following the signing of a 12-point comprehensive peace agreement between Maoists and seven parliamentary parties.
But the government decided Sunday to close down its regional offices and centralize it in the capital.
The foreign ministry said regional offices were opened without government approval.
The government couldn’t implement a request to limit the organization’s access to information at certain government and other offices.
The government had asked OHCHR to formulate an exit policy which was ignored.
Having supported the entry of the UN body into the country during the royal regime, the government is finding it difficult to send it back.
Foreign presence is here to stay.
This is the stark reality; once invited, foreigners will continue to stick like leeches despite objections.
