NC president rejects Maoist-led govt.; main opposition can join govt. under NC leadership

Kathmandu, 15 July: Nepali Congress (NCA) Acting President Sushil Koirala Thursday rejected a Maoist-led government but said the main opposition can join a government under its leadership.
“Maoist leadership is not acceptable to us. But they can join a government under our leadership.
“The situation in the country isn’t normal. The NC is the second largest party under shoes leadership the government should be formed,” Koirala told a gathering in the capital.
The party central committee meet continues for the second consecutive day Thursday to discuss government and leadership.
Former foreign minister Chakra Bastola Wednesday three big parties share the premiership on rotation basis.

Home minister seeks Maoist help to arrest Kham

Kathmandu, 15 July: Home Minister Bhim Rawal Thursday sought the cooperation of Maoist Chairman Prachanda Thursday for the arrest of Maoist military leader Kali Bahadur Kham who is absconding.
Rawal briefed the Maoist chief on the latest security situation in the country.
Police say they have unconfirmed reports Kham may be hiding in a camp for PLA combatants under UNMIN observation.
Kham has also been accused in the murder of Kathmandu businessman Ram Hari Shrestha.

Four women injured in Birgunj bomb blast

Supreme court issues stay order not to execute govt. order

Kathmandu, 15 July A bench of Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha stayed an order of caretaker government of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to withdraw murder charges against 20 persons accused for murdering three Maoists in Bara 20 June.
The court decision said the government decision of 30 June went against the right of victims.
Shrestha said the government move violated article 24 of the interim constitution.
Charges have been filed at Bara district court.

Gorkha soldier killed in Afghanistan identified

Kathmandu, 15 July: Arjun Purja Pun,34, is the fourth Gorkha soldier killed in Afghanistan with British Gurkhas.
He was killed by a renegade Afghan soldier.
Pun left behind a son and daughter.

Kham’s bank account frozen

Kathmandu, 15 July: Maoist central committee member and commander of the PLA Fifth Division in Rolpa Kali Bahadur Kham, is found to have conducted suspicious transactions with Chinese traders who were robbed on Friday, the police claimed, according to Republica.
According to investigative officials, a file of transactions worth NRs 18,900,000 with Chinese traders was uncovered from his laptop which was seized in a raid on his flat in Gongabu Sunday.
Meanwhile, police Wednesday blocked Kham’s bank accounts and verified that the Santro car (No.1 Cha 6736) reportedly used by Kham had the number plate of another vehicle.
Besides writing to block an Everest Bank account, the police corresponded to the Nepal Rastra Bank to block Kham’s bank accounts throughout the country.

UNMIN’s reply to govt. amid developing feud

Kathmandu, 15 July: Chief of UNMIN Karin Landgren on Wednesday sent a reply to the government saying the UN political mission had presented the non-paper on timetable for integration and rehabilitation as per its mandate, The Kathmandu Post reports.
IN a letter to the Peace and Reconstruction Ministry, Landgren said the non-paper was intended go facilitate the parties to decide on a action plan for the integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants.
“The non-paper is not UNMIN’s action plan or roadmap on integration and rehabilitation, It is a reference material aimed at facilitating the political parties to make a decision,” said an official at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, quoting the letter.

New Zealand sporting honour for Tenzing, Hillary

Kathmandu, 15 July: In recognition of the team spirit exhibited by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay when they scaled Mt. Everest successfully on May 29, 1953, the New Zealand Olympic Committee has decided to name the country’s Commonwealth Games logo “29028 Hillary and Tenzing”, The Himalayan Times reports.
The Games will be held in Delhi later this year and the “29028” in the logo stands for the height of Mt Everest in feet when it was conquered by Hillary and Tenzing.
