KING BIRENDRA NOTED USA DIDN’T EVEN GIVE REFUGEE STATUS TO SHAH OF IRAN WHEN HE WAS TOPPLED.
Kathmandu, 17 April: King Birendra told Dr. Bkek Bahadar Thapa USA didn’t even give refugee status to afriend like the Shah of Iran, the former Ambassador to USA Dr. Bhek Bahadur Thapa said in an article entitled: Thoughts of King Birendra.
Thapa said this in at article in Nepal news magazine Sunday.
“We’re not important in the eyes of USA. I don’t give much importance to going there like a tourist by spending money from the state coffer. That’s why I didn’t give importance to a visit without much result.
‘I’ll certainly go there when if a situation is created for some result.”
The king made the comments while discussing a possible state visit to USA.
He did go to Washington on a state visit when Dr. Thapa was ambassador, according to the article.
Without quoting the former king directly, Thapa said Birendra told him USA even didn’t even give shelter to the Shah of Iran considered a friend.
“If that was the situation of the emperor of Iran who was so close, what will be ours? How will USA look at a small and powerless state like us?” Birendra asked.
Birendra and Thapa discussed bilateral ties as the king was armed with documents on the table on relations from the time of King Tribhvan.
