WEDNESDAY LAST DAY OF 2067

WEDNESDAY LAST DAY ON YEAR 2067

By Bhola B Rana

Kathmandu, 13 April: Wednesday is the last day of the year 2067 which by all accounts has been a dreadful year for Nepal and Nepalis with very little to cheer about.
Energy Minister Lokendra Bista was brutally attacked by still unidentified assailants the night he was appointed highlighting the deteriorating security situation in the country and even in the capital.
A hired Indian assassin even entered the high-security Central Jail to kill a prisoner in a failed assassination attempt.
Major political parties spent their entire effort to topple government and install a new government; the effort will continue in the new year.2068.
Maoists toppled the 21-month government of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal who continued as government chief for seven months as caretaker as Maoists couldn’t assemble as majority government.
Maoist Chief Prachanda negotiated a secret 7-point agreement with UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal without UML support to get into Singha Durbar.
Maoists got there alright 3 February electing Khanal government chief with their support.
But two months have elapsed and a complete government hasn’t been assembled.
So nine months of 2067was spent on bringing down a government while attempting to form a stable government as foreign complaints they were encountering pushing programmes without a government.
A constitution has been promised by 28 May to institutionalize a republic but the promises won’t be met again as Khanal hinted the constituent assembly will continue in perpetuity until a basic law is drifted.
Assembly members were elected for a two-year terms and with such attitude there will no incentive e for lawmakers to draft a constitution as they spend their effort in power grab.
Uncertainly prevails amid insecurity.
The economy is in shambles registering only a 3.8 percent GDP growth.
With load-shedding and energy shortage industrial production has been hit,
Immediate beneficiaries are the three big powers through their access to Singha Durbar and parliament.
But what benefit when the images of parties and their leaders have plummeted?
