Kathmandu, 15 April: Bereaved at their bread earner’s demise in Afghanistan, Dil Bahadur Gurung’s family and relatives were waiting for his body in a lounge of Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday, utterly unaware that the body they were about to receive would daze them later, The Kathmandu Post reports..

The coffin arrived with the tag Dil Bahadur Gurung, but the relatives were shocked when they uncovered the casket for the funeral rites. To their shock, they saw someone else’s corpse was lying in the casket when they opened at Ramghat, Pokhara, for the funeral.

Gurung was one among four Nepalis killed in a barbaric attack on the UN Assistance Mission (UNAM) office in northern Afganisthan. The body sent in Gurung’s name was in fact of Narayan Bahadur Thapa, who was also killed in the same attack. Thapa’s body was slated to arrive on Friday.

Stunned, Gurung’s family handed over the body to Thapa’s relatives, protracting their wait for his corpse.

“Actually, the body was of Narayan Bahadur Thapa,” said Ram Subha Gurung, the maternal uncle of Gurung. “We wanted to open the coffin right away at airport but didn’t as that would disturb people. It was hard for us not to find his body in the coffin.”

“We first got into a dilemma what to do with the body,” he added. “Later, when it was revealed that the body was that of Thapa, we contacted the family and handed over his body to them.”

Gurung’s body is scheduled to arrive on Friday morning, in the coffin named for Narayan Bahadur Thapa.
