NC CONVENES CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEET WEDNESDAY

NC CONVENES CENTAL COMMITTEE MEET WEDNESDAY

Kathmandu, 16 May: Main opposition NC has called a central committee meet Wednesday as it lobbies for support to vote down a communist dominated government of UML and Maoists to defeat a proposal to extend the tenure of the constituent assembly (CA)l by one year after 28May.
The government has concluded a constitution can’t be promulgated in th remaining 12days.
NC President Sushil Koirala Monday held six-hour separate discussions with parties to lobby support for its demand for the dissolution of the government of Jhalanath Khanal and oppose CA tenureextension.
The NC called for what it called a ‘national government’ to complete the peace process and constitution drafting.
NC has called for a national government even as it earlier pushed for a majority-government after Maoists swept the CA elections in April 2008 toppling it as the biggest party.
Government of communists and ‘democratic parties’ with the support of 22 parties brought down the Maoist-led government of Chairman Prachanda barely after nine months in office two years. to form a majority government which NC now opposes
The majority government was headed by Madhav Kumar Nepal of UMl.
But CNC and a section the UML led by Khanal; brought down the Nepal government after21 months in office
NC was demanding leadership of a government to draft a constitution after toppling Nepal.
The NC strategy failed miserably and Khanal formed a majority government with Maoist support.
When NC once pushed a majority government, now opposes it calling for a national government.
Meanwhile, 17 of 27parties in parliament Monday presented a memorandum to Prime Minister Khanal demanding promulgation of a constituton by 28 May by concluding the peace process.
The memorandum was presented as the government sought a one-year extension of the CA.
