FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER SHAILEDRA KUMAR UPADHAYA DEAD ON EVEREST

Kathmandu, 9 May: Former Foreign Minister Shailendra Kumar Upadhaya, 82, died on the 8848meters high Mount Monday afternoon, while attempting to be the oldest person to climb the world’s tallest peak, family and the fve-member expedition sources said.
He collapsed and died as he was proceeding to the peak’s second camp at 6,250 meters.
His body will be brought to base camp Tuesday.
Upadhaya was attempting to break a record set by Nepal’s Min Bahadur Serchan who set foot on top of the world 25 May 2008 when he was 77 breaking a record set by a Japanese.
‘”He was my inspiration, We used to share a room. He used to cough, If he could climb peak, I thought so can I,” Upadhaya said before leaving for the peak this spring,
Upadhaya joined the panchayat and held various ministerial positions during rules of King Mahendra and King Birendra, including foreign minister.
He was also Nepal’s permanent representatives to the United Nations.
While in the UN, he played a leading role in promoting the cause of least developed countries and land-locked countries.

MJFN DEMANDS JOINT PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE PROBE UPDATE
Kathmandu, 9 May: MJFN emergency parliamentary party meeting Monday demanded a joint parliamentary committee probe into CIAA charges its lawmakers are involved in the misuse of diplomatic passports.
A memorandum is being submitted to Speaker Subash Nemwang Tuesday.
The party said charges against its lawmakers were biased and the move of the CIAA was aimed at defaming the party to dissolve the constituent assembly.
CIAA, through the parliament secretariat, asked for investigation into activities of six terai legislators.
Parliament secretariat acted on CIAA request.

GOVT. OFFICIALLY ASKS KARMACHARI KOSH TO LOAN NOC RS 2 BILLION
Kathmandu, 9 May: Finance ministry Monday through letter stood guarantee and asked Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh to loan Rs 2 billion to cash-strapped Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) to import POL products from India.
The move has been protested by employees of the Kosh.
