SPECIAL COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES FIRST SCHEDULE FOR REGROUPING OF MAOIST FIGHTERS

Kathmandu, 6 June: The special committee on integration, resettlement and supervision of 19,000 plus former Maoist fighters headed by Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal decided Monday to send teams of government security forces and Maoist PLA monitors by Friday to 28 camps and caotonments..
The meeting decided on the ’first schedule until 24 June’ for integration and resettlement, Khanal said after the meeting.
The number of former fighters to be integrated will be listed by 19 June.
The training and recruitment of surveyors for regrouping of combatants will be completed by 24 June.
Maoists will be separated mainly for integration and resettlement.
The regrouping should be completed by 31August, Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat of NC and member of special committee said.

NC SAYS KHANAL GOVT. CAN’T MAKE MAJOR APPOINTMENTS

Kathmandu, 6 June: After signing a five-point agreement with two ruling parties-UCPN(Maoist) and UML, main opposition NC Monday said the tripartite agreement between then should be ‘additionally and clearly explained’ following a central working committee (CWA) meet.
The CWC concluded the government in only a ‘caretaker’ following the five-point agreement and it can’t take important ‘administrative and political decisions”, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki said.
Government’s appointments will be opposed and asked the party parliamentary party to oppose them.
The committee charged money allocated in the budget were being spent arbitrarily and efforts were ongoing to appoint vice-chancellors to universities.

Ananda Prasad Dhungana and Nabindra Raj Joshi opposed sections of the report.
The meeting chaired by President Sushil Koirala decided to convene a two-day meeting of party district presidents in Dhulikhel, Kavre, 11 June.

FIVE-PARTY MADESH FRONT CRITICAL OF NC

Kathmandu, 6 June: A meeting of the five-member Loktantrik Madeshbadi Front Monday demanded the immediate resignation of the communist majority government led by Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal following a five-point agreement between the Big Three.
MJFN Republican Chairman Jayaprakash Gupta demanded the front should be included in a parliamentary monitoring committee for the agreement.
‘Any agreement between three parties can’t have national character without involvement of the front,” he said.
Gupta called for a ’political agreement’ to implement the five-point agreement between Maoists. UML and NC signed last Sunday with a clear schedule.
The front has 71 lawmakers in parliament.
State restructuring along federal lines with Madesh province is non-negotiable.
It said main opposition NC’s activities were suspicious for not pushing a 10-point demand it presented for constituent assembly tenure extension charging it for not ‘taking a stand’.
The front demanded implementation of the peace procedures within the next two months with a schedule for integration and resettlement of specific numbers of former fighters..

UML YOUTH LEADER ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING JOURNALIST

Kathmandu, 6 June: Rohit Koirala, of Morang UML Youth Force- a youth wing of ruling UML, has been arrested by district police for assaulting a journalist and11 others involved are absconding, police said Monday. Reporter Shilanath Dhakal of Nagarik is undergoing treatment at a Biratnagar hospital.
A delegation of journalists met Home Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara and demanded action against assailants Monday.

ADDITIONAL POLICE SECURITY FOR CHAIRMAN PRACHANDA

Kathmandu, 6 June: A strengthened 270-member force of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force was deployed Monday for the security of Maoist Chairman Prachanda.
The force was deployed after an armed 50-member of Maoist PLA security contingent was withdrawn Sunday for the chairman .
A meeting of Maoist office bearers decided to retain only government security force for the chairman and other top Maoist leaders provided by Girija Prasad Koirala when he was prime minister.
A faction in the UCPN (Maoist) led by Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya is opposing the decision taken at the initiative of Prachanda.

UML STANDING COMMITTEE ADJOURNED UNTIL WEDNEDAY

Kathmandu, 6 June: A standing committee meeting of UML leading the government was adjourned until Wednesday after briefly discussing an agenda for a special central committee by the end of June.
Senior leader and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal wasn’t present at the meeting.

PRISONER COMMITS SUICIDE IN PRISON

Kathmandu, 6 June: Rudra Shahi, 40, hanged himself to death Monday in Dhangadi prison in Kailali, police said.
Shahi was one day ealier for attempted burglary of a shop in Dhangadi.
An independent probe has been demanded into the police claim of suicide.

US OFFICIAL ENDS NEPAL, BHUTAN VISIT

Kathmandu, 6 June: Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of US, Kelly Clements Monday concluded a five-day visit Nepal, Bhutan and discussed humanitarian protection, assistance ifor refugees and other vulnerable populations in the region, a US embassy statement said..

Clements met Bhutanese government leaders urging Bhutan to take tangible immediate steps to help resolve the protracted refugee situation in Nepal as a sign of Thimpu’s commitment to democratic values and human rights, the US Embassy said.
“The government of Bhutan also agreed to examine other ways to resolve this humanitarian situation in a humane and expedient manner, especially for the most vulnerable”, the embassy said.






Bhutan government reiterated its April 2011 offer to Nepal government to reengage in bilateral discussions as soon as possible on the modalities for the voluntary return and reintegration of refugees with legitimate citizenship claims to Bhutan., the US embassy said..
Clements appreciated Nepal's commitment to ensure the safe transit of new arrivals to India and to respect the basic rights of Tibetans residing in Nepal.
