MADHAV KUMAR NEPAL, SUSHIL KOIRALA HOLD TALKS ON GOVT. FORMATION
Kathmandu, 23 Aug.: UML dialogue team chief Madhav Kumar Nepal Tuesday morning held talks with NC President Sushil Koirala to appoint a successor of Caretaker Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal.
Sher Bahadur Deuba is main opposition NC’s candidate to succeed Khanal whose successor has to be elected by five in the afternoon Wednesday.
Parties in parliament couldn’t elect a successor even in a one week deadline that ended Sunday afternoon.
President D. Ram Baran Yadav extended the deadline for another three days at request of parties in parliament.
The second deadline ends Wednesday afternoon at five.
Maoists have concluded a government chief won’t be elected by consensus; Second Vice-chairman Dr.Baburam Bhattaraii UCPN (Maoist) candidate for prime minister.
Chairman Prachanda and Bhattarai held discussions with Mahanta Thakur, chairman of TMLP—a constituent of a five-member front of Madeshbadi parties—to garner support of the terai parties.
Both UML and Madeshbadi Front Monday urged formation of a consensus government.

SAMUEL TAMRAT, SUBASH NEMWANG TALKS
Kathmandu, 23 Aug: Samuel Tamrat, special emissary of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is holding dialogue Tuesday with Speaker Subash Nemwang on the delayed peace process and constitution drafting on the fourth day of his five-day Nepal visit.
Tamrat has expressed concern with completing the delayed processes; a 31 August deadline will again be missed.

He’s reporting to the UN security council after concluding his visit.
UNMIN-the political arm of UN—withdrew 15 January after a failed four-year mission to help complete the processes.
UN oversees development from New York even afterwithdrawing from Nepal.

UML VICE-CHAIRMAN ASHOK RAI TO PROBE THREATS BY PARTY YOUTH LEADERAGAINST NEWSPAPER,AND JOURNALIST

Monday appointed Vice-chairman Ashok Rai to probe repeated public threats by party youth leader Mahesh Basnet against a broadsheet and its editor.
Party disciplinary committee alerted the central committee to probe the repeated threats
Basnet has been charged for a murderous attack against Biratnagar
reporter Khilanath Dhakal.

MOTHERS’ GROUP RESPONSBILE FOR SUICIDE SAYS PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE
Kathmandu, 23 Aug.: Parliament’s women, child and social welfare committee Monday blamed a mothers’ group in Butwal for a suicide by Kabita Thapa.
Kabita committed suicide after being humiliated by the group in the west Nepali town over her activities
An investigation team of the committee led by Binod Pahadi probed the incident.
The probe committee concluded the humiliating behavior of the group a ’challenge to human civilization; alleging the group that should have protected rights took law into its own hand.

PARLIAMENTARY HEARING COMMITTEE EMPOWERED
Kathmandu, 23 Aug.: Parliamentary hearing committee to confirm or reject appoints to constitutional bodies by government has been empowered through amendments of its business procedures.
Appointments now will be confirmed by two-third members of the committee present and voting
Previously, appoints could be confirmed even by one committee member
Hearings can now be conducted even when incumbents remain in office.
Hearings on nominations of retiring Foreign Secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai to Japan and Hari Kumar Shrestha to Bangladesh can now be conducted.

YOGENDRA PRASAD SHRESTHA ARRESTED
Kathmandu, 23 Aug.: Yogendra Prasad Shrestha, executive chairman of Share Markets and Finance (NSMF) was arrested from Nawalparasi Monday.
Shrestha went into hiding more than two months after revelation of one of the biggest frauds in Nepali banking history.
Shrestha and his family were involved in siphoning off Rs 200 million in deposits in the finance company for personal use
Nepal Rashtra Bank has declared the finance company troubled.

NIDC CAPITAL MARKET NET PROFIT DECLINES
Kathmandu, 23 Aug.: Net profit of NIDC Capital Market Ltd. in fiscal 2067/68 ending mid-July declined to Rs. 64.473 million.
The company recorded a net profit of Rs.100, 162 million the previous fiscal year.

DEEPAK BAHADUR SAUD APPOINTD COORDINATOR
Kathmandu, 23 Aug.: Deepak Bahadur Saud has been appointed by national sports council (NSC) coordinator of a secretariat of the 6th national games to be held in Dhandadi and Mahendranagar in another seven months.
Saud is President of Far-West regional sports development committee.
Nabin Joshi and Basant Gurung are members.
