Kathmandu, 23 Aug.: A meeting of three ruling parties—Maoists, UML and MJFN--decided Monday to extend the term of constituent assembly (CA) by nine months.
The meeting was convened by Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal , Radio Nepal said.
Only one week remains for a three-month term extension of end 31 August.
A constitution to institutionalize a declared hasn’t been promulgated for three years and three months.
The latest government decision is controversial and many consider it unconstitutional.
It’s legality will be challenged at the supreme court which is already discussing a writ saying repeated decisions by illegal.
The supreme court in a major verdict last decided the CA term could be extended by six months only—three months will elapse 31 August.
Three ruling parties and government have only been engaged in either retaining power or pulling down governments sidelining drafting of a constitution amid deep differences.
Maoists are attempting to impost a communist state opposed by adherents of multi-party liberal democracy.
The extension will give parties more time just to engage in power politics.
The constituent assembly is no longer an elected body because its two-elected mandate has been completed.
The once elected assembly members have extended their tenure themselves and they are, therefore, self-appointed members of a dead body that was once elected .
