CA TENURE EXENDED UNTIL 30 NOVEMBER
UPDATE
Kathmandu, 29 Aug 29: Parliament Monday night extended by majority vote the tenure of the constituent assembly (CA) by another three months until 30 Mangshir coinciding with 30 November.
A three-month tenure was to end 31 August.
The skeleton government of Maoist leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai got the support of the new opposition NC and UML to extend the tenure barely nine hours after installation.
Parliament earlier approved the 10th amendment to an interim constitution presented by the outgoing government to enable the passage of the CA extension
Parliament also voted down a protest note of RPP-Nepal against the CA term extension—the only party opposing the extension two dys before the expiry of the current tenure.
The party has been demanding dissolution of the assembly and elections for a fresh mandate.
Altogether 537 among 541 legislators voted for extension.
Parliament session was adjourned though notification.

“Home Minister Bhim Rawal is a close embassy contact and an experienced leader well-placed to oversee the police services. After a series of disappointing Home Ministers, including combative Bamdev Guatam in Pushpa Dahal’s government and the feckless Krishna Sitaula in G.P. Koirala’s government, we view Rawal as a welcome change.
Prakash Mahat is also a close Embassy contact. Post knows pro-American Sujata Koirala well but has doubts about her effectiveness.”
(Extracts from Wikileaks cables from US embassy to US State Department in Washington published Monday by The Reporter in Kathmandu The leaks reveal embassy links in government and parties embarrassing individuals and parties The leaks again demonstrate weaknesses of US government in maintaining confidentiality of conversations with US diplomats Too much emphasis is put of ethnic background and ability of persons in contacts of US embassy to pursue its interests.”
