COURT TO ISSUE ARREST WARRANT FOR CHATURVEDI
Kathmandu, 9 Sept.: The Judgment Execution Section (JES) of Kathmandu District Court today [Thursday] said it will do the needful to arrest former Chief of then Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC) Ramagya Prasad Chaturvedi from tomorrow if he does not surrender to serve the jail sentence set by the Supreme Court yesterday [Wednesday], The Himalayan Times reports.

“I will initiate the process for arresting him tomorrow if he does not surrender,” Puna Ram Khanal, Chief, JEC said.

A division bench of Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi and Justice Shushila Karki yesterday sentenced Chaturvedi to 18-month imprisonment, convicting him of accumulating disproportionate property when he held powerful public positions.

Partially upholding the six-year-old Special Court verdict, the Supreme Court had slapped the jail sentence along with a fine of Rs 14 million on Chaturvedi, a former chief of then RNAC and ex-chief of Nepal Oil Corporation. The apex court also decided to confiscate equal amount of Rs 14 million with interest as well.

“If he surrenders, he may get 20 per cent discount on jail sentence and fine,” he said adding, “Otherwise the law will take its own course.”

As per Section 43 of the Punishment and Fine Chapter of the Country’s Code, a convicted criminal can enjoy 20 per cent discount on punishment and fine if he surrenders before the court within sixty days.

The Supreme Court had refused to give relief to former minister Chiranjivi Wagle when he challenged the decision stating that he was planning to surrender before the court within sixty days, but court officials had arrested him a day after the verdict was pronounced.
