FIFTH NRN MEET BEGINS WEDNESDAY
Kathmandu, 9 Oct.: The fifth conference of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRN) is going to be held here from October 12, RSS reports.

President of the NRN, Devman Hirachan says that around 800 Nepalese working overseas in 35 countries will take part in the conference.

The three-day-long conference has the slogan,"Our network, our identity: Prosperous Nepal".

It is said that the Association was established 10 years ago, and NRNs living in more than 56 countries of the world, have been associated with it.

Hirachan said discussion will be held to resolve problems faced by Nepalese in foreign countries.

The conference will elect a new working committee of the Association.

NEPAL’S NIHITA BISWAS OUT OF BIGG BOSS HOUSE

Kathmandu, 9 Oct.: Nepali citizen Nihita Biswas is the first of the 13 inmates, who has been evicted from the Bigg Boss' house, website of The Times of India reported Sunday from New Delhi.
23-year-old Biswas, who is married to 66-year-old serial killer Charles Sobhraj, was pitted against VJ and model Pooja Misra.

Apparently, the latter's histrionics including sob stories and catfights, worked its charm on viewers who voted in her support. The eviction will be aired tonight on Bigg Boss.

When Nihita Biswas took the plunge to join "Bigg Boss 5", she did expect to face a barrage of personal questions about her marriage to jailed conman Charles Sobhraj, but queries about her sex life was something she never expected.

"I was expecting a lot of questions. I knew everyone would be curious, but I never thought people could go to that extent. I am quite young and don't talk about all these things...so I was quite shocked," Nihita told IANS after being evicted from the Colors' reality show Saturday.

Among many other questions asked, news anchor Mandeep Belvi, one of the participants, had asked Nihita: "Did you have sex with Sobhraj?"

Nihita married 67-year Sobhraj, also known as 'bikini killer', in 2008. Sobhraj is serving a 20-year life term in Kathmandu's Central Jail for the murder of an American backpacker in 1975.

The question not just left Nihita's mother, Shakuntala Thapa, a senior lawyer practising at Nepal's Supreme Court, bewildered, but also the 23-year-old.

"I am not used to such questions and they should have exercised some restraint. But I must mention that Mandeep apologised later.

"She came up to me and said she shouldn't have asked me such a question on a public platform. She wasn't the kind of person I thought she was. She is, in fact, one of the nicest inside the house," Nihita said.

Nihita was pitted against VJ Pooja Missra for the first week's eviction. She said she feels "cheated" with the verdict.

"I was shocked to hear my name. I am sure this was all specifically designed. Otherwise in my comparison, Pooja should have gone.

"I am a more popular person. But I have heard she has personal connections, and I am from another country. So it wasn't fair at all. I feel quite cheated," she said.

Nevertheless, Nihita enjoyed meeting new people and learning a few things about Bollywood. Now, she is looking forward to going back to Nepal.

"I will be going back to my normal life," said the young girl, who spent just six days at the " Bigg Boss" house, where a total of 14 contestants were locked in Oct 2.

And she is not ruling out coming back to the show.

"I hope I am brought back as a wild card entry or something because now I know the nature of the show. If Pooja Missra continues to use her connections...hopefully she would be still there, and then if they take a 'panga' with me, I can be nasty too."

SOLAR POWERED CAMERA ON SMALL HMALAYAN PEAK BRINGS EVEREST ON INTERNET

Kathmandu, 9 Oct.: The world´s highest webcam has been installed in the Nepalese Himalayas, beaming live images of Mount Everest back to scientists studying the effects of climate change on the planet´s tallest peak, AFP reports from Kathmandu.

The solar-powered camera, set at 5,675 metres (18,618 feet) on Kala Patthar, a smaller mountain facing Everest, will withstand temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 Fahrenheit) and operates during daylight
The device, developed by German surveillance firm Mobotix, is more than a kilometre higher than the previous record for a high-altitude webcam set by a 4,389-metre-altitude camera at the base camp of Mount Aconcagua in Argentina.
"We spent months developing the perfect set-up for the installation and invested a lot of time testing and verifying the system," said Giampietro Kohl of Ev-K2-CNR, the mountain research group which installed the camera.

"It inspired us on to set a record: operating the highest webcam in the world."

The webcam operates from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Nepalese time (0015 to 1215 GMT) from the Kala Patthar summit, recording stunning images of 8,848-metre Mount Everest as well as the South Col.

The image is updated every five minutes, allowing climatologists to track the movement of the clouds around the mountain´s summit.

"Researchers selected Kala Patthar as the camera location because it offers an excellent view of the western side of Mount Everest, including the north and southwest faces of the mountain and the West Ridge," a spokesman for Mobotix said in a statement.

The camera, which went live in September, uses a wireless connection to transmit images to the Ev-K2-CNR Pyramid Laboratory, located at an altitude of 5,050 metres.

The footage is then analysed by scientists in Italy who hope to learn more about climate change and global warming using the images in conjunction with meteorological data gathered from Everest.

The exact height of the world´s tallest peak is also being re-measured in a separate Nepali project attempting to end confusion on the issue.

The mountain, which straddles Nepal and China, is generally thought to stand at 8,848 metres after an Indian survey in 1954, but other more recent measurements have varied by several metres.

Last year, officials from Nepal and China reached a compromise under which Nepal measured the height of Everest´s snowcap at 8,848 metres and China measured the rock peak at 8,844 metres.

The final result will be known in two years´ time after reference points are set up on Everest and then global-positioning system satellites are used to calculate the precise measurement.

The first measurement of Everest was made in 1856. It was conquered in 1953 by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, and has since been climbed by more than 3,000 people.
