COMPLAINT LODGED AGAINST TIA OFFICIAL
Kathmandu, 31 Oct.: A complaint has been filed at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) seeking action against an official at Tribhuvan International Airport for taking bribe from Dechen Sherpa for clearing travel documents, The Himalayan Times reports.

“As a formal complaint has been filed with us, we will definitely investigate the scandal and take action against him,” Bhagawati Kumar Kafle, Secretary, CIAA, told The Himalayan Times.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai had directed top officials at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority to take action against the non-gazetted official at the Office of Immigration, Purna Bahadur Basnet, who was caught taking bribe on tape.

Bhattarai spoke to Sushil JB Rana, secretary at the ministry, Kafle, secretary at anti-graft body, over phone and directed them to take action against the official.

Basnet, an official at the Office of Immigration, Tribhuvan International Airport, was found haggling with Dechen Sherpa over kickback, before settling for Rs 100,000, for her ‘hassle-free travel’ to the US.

Dechen, a native of Khumjung, Solukhumbu, was stopped by Basnet at TIA on October 8 as she was venturing to board a Qatar Airways flight to America via Doha.

Basnet did not allow Dechen to board the plane saying that she was not a Nepali citizen and had forged her travel documents.

On October 12, Basnet called Dechen at the Department of Immigration, Kalikasthan, and bargained over bribe to let her travel.

She paid Rs 100,000 to him in Kalikasthan Chowk. The video shows Basnet, clad in black jacket, receiving the amount and counting it under a banyan tree at Kalikasthan Chowk.

Earlier, the Department of Immigration had suspended Basnet and launched an investigation following orders given by Leela Mani Paudyal, secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office.
