DETAILS OF MAOIST FIGHTERS PREPARED BY UNMIN FLAWED
By Bhola B Rana
Kathmandu, 12 Details of 19,000 plus former Maoist PLA fighters at 28 cantonments and satellite camps nation-wide five years by UNMIN are flawed, a study this month has revealed.
The details were prepared by UNMIN, a political agency of the UN, which was invited to help conclude the peace process and constitution drafting.
Nepal’s political players invited the UN with lobbying of western countries to end a 10-year Maoist insurgency that claimed more than 17,000 lives on both sides of the conflict.
The corrected report has to be presented to a special committee on integration, resettlement and supervision of the fighters headed by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.
The committee’s secretariat was entrusted responsibility Sunday and asked to present a corrected and updated version at the next special committee meet 16 Dec.’
“The names, surnames, address. education and other details of fighters verified by UNMIN don’t match. The number of such fighters haven’t been verified,” special committee member from UML Bhim Rawal said.
Discrepancies surfaced after the special committee secretariat conducted a fresh survey for regrouping of fighters detailing their preferences.
The fighters were asked if they preferred integration, voluntary retirement or resettlement.
Finance Minister and committee member Barshaman Pun confirmed shortcomings and flaws in the UNMIN report and said ages and ranks of fighters don’t match.
The latest development comes as Maoists boasted they duped UNMIN into exaggerating their fighter which was only 7,000
Critics charges UNMIN for a political bias favouring Maoists.
UNMIN quit Nepal 15 December following a failed mission.
