Kathmandu, 26 March: Chairman of Constitutional Committee Nilambar Acharya has hinted that the Supreme Court would pave way for extending the term of Constituent Assembly, Reportersnepal writes. .
Acharya claimed that the SC won't held the nation hostage to its decision while speaking at the Reporters' Club Nepal Monday in the capital.
" State organs cannot push the nation into crisis. As an organ of the state I don't think it will push the nation into crisis," said Acharya while claiming that " the tenure of the CA can be extended if the political powers unite".
Speaking at the program presided by the Club's President Rishi Dhamala, Acharya ruled out the possibility to promulgate the new constitution by the present May 27 deadline. He stressed on the need to curtail regular constitution writing procedures by amending the Interim Constitution, concluding the peace process, preparing the first draft of the new constitution, and to form a powerful national consensus government by incorporating major political parties.
" There is no possibility to write the constitution under status quo. Now the three parties to should shoulder the responsibility to rescue the nation or to push into crisis. The nation would reel into unprecedented crisis if the status quo is extended," claimed Acharya.
However Acharya said that the political parties would find a solution to such unprecedented crisis and urged all to rest assured on their capability to deliver the nation out of the present status quo.
Ruling out the possibility to find an alternate to drafting the new constitution, Acharya claimed that there was no alternative other than to write the new constitution.
Asserting that concluding peace process will build up inter-party consensus among political parties, Acharya called on political parties to expedite the process.
Responding to questions on the possibility to draft the new constitution without the provisions of federalism, Acharya said that as the new constitution was named as the Federal Democratic Republic by the first session of the CA, there was no possibility to promulgate the new constitution without it.
He also trashed the rumors on the possibility to re-instating the constitution of 1990 with minor revisions.
