REACTION TO SUPREME COURT JUDGMENT SWIFT, CAUTIOUS

Kathmandu, 29 March: Reaction to Wednesday’s single bench
supreme court monumental judgment was immediate and generally cautious
in a charged political environment.
The decision directly impacted national politics amid
uncertainty whether peace process and constitution drafting
process will be completed by the end of May.
Communists dominate national politics.
‘I said from the outset a constitution should be promulgated by 27 May,” said Subash Nemwang, who along with Prime Minister Baburam
Bhattarai, called for a review of a rejection by the Office of the Registrar, requests for reconsideration of a November 2011 judgment the current tenure of the constituent assembly (CA) would be the last.
The apex court suggested either a referendum or fresh elections to break the current deadlock.
The CA couldn’t hasn’t been able to promulgate a constitution declared by an unelected parliament which declared a republic even declaring a Hindu state secular.
RPP-Nepal is the only party with seats in parliament demanding a referendum to decide on a monarchy and a Hindu state.
Several members of parliament/CA , whose elected two-year
tenure has ended without promulgation, criticized Wednesday’s verdict.
The criticism also comes from members of a body whose
public image has also been damaged and tarnished by crimes and irregularities
Lawmakers are in jail for kidnapping; many have been expelled for forgeries and some have even been convicted for murder yet continue as
lawmakers.
“Nobody will be spared if a constitution isn’t promulgated and
the country and the country dragged into a conflict,”
said President of main opposition NC Suhsil Koirala
“There should be no more excuses to complete the peace process now to write a constitution,: the party’s chief whip Laxman Ghimere added.
