MOUNTAIN COUNTRIES’PLEDGE JOINT EFFORT TO FIGHT EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Kathmandu, 7 April: Mountain countries have agreed to make joint efforts to integrate the global climate change and development agenda following a two-day meeting in Kathmandu, The Himalayan Times reports.

The conference, ‘Mountain Countries on Climate Change’, decided to adopt a 10-point Kathmandu Call for Action and hailed Nepal’s initiative aimed at resolving issues plaguing the countries.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai said Nepal was at the frontline of climate change as it was ranked among the world’s five most vulnerable countries. He stressed the need to boost financial resources and capacity building for sustainable development.

“Mountains are a great source of energy, food and biodiversity. They are the source of water for billions of people. They are home to communities rich in ethnocultural diversity and traditional knowledge,” said Bhattarai.

Climate change has affected mountain communities disproportionately, he said, adding that the countries are yet to draw adequate attention of international climate change negotiators.

“This realisation has led us to believe that impacts of climate change on mountains and the people dependent on them need to be minutely understood and holistically analysed, and concrete actions taken to address them,” added Bhattarai.

The mountain initiative has emerged as a global platform for all mountainous countries to discusses impacts and vulnerabilities of mountain ecosystems and how climate change is affecting livelihoods of the disadvantaged.

More than 300 participants from 25 countries, including ministers from the mountainous countries, attended the meet.

Participant countries have called on development partners to help establish dedicated funding arrangements for mitigation programmes in mountain countries within the framework of UNFCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) to build resilience of local communities against climate change.

The countries have pledged to enhance cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure adequate and effective flow of financial resources, including innovative financing and technology, to mountain countries.

The conference has decided to give continuity to the mountain initiative by organising similar meets through mutual consultation.

POLICE RESCUE ABDUCTED YOUTH

Kathmandu, 7 April: Police last night rescued Chandrika Yadav (20) of Goithi VDC and arrested both the kidnappers with the help of Indian police. Yadav was abducted in the

According to Armed Police Force SP Bhuwaneshwor Chaudhary of Rajbiraj-based Border Security Office, Chandrika was abduc-ted while she was on her way to Bhardaha-based Kankalini School to take exams with her brother.

Police held abductors Rabindra Magrait (26) of Tricoul VDC and Subodh Yadav (35) of India, who had taken Chandrika hostage and manhandled her brother.

SP Chaudhary said, “After we got the information that the abductors forcefully took Chandrika on a motorcycle to the border, we intensified our search operations.” He said that Indian police helped them rescue the girl and arrest the kidnappers as they had already entered the Indian border.

“We handed over Chandrika to her parents today,” he said, adding that the kidnappers have been sent to District Police Office, Saptari, for necessary legal action against them.

Police had also impounded the motorcycle used in kidnapping.
