________________________________________ UN OBJECTS TO COL. RAJU BASNET’S PROMOTION Kathmandu, 21 July: UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR}has expressed serious objection to a Nepal Army (NA) recommendation to defence ministry to promote Col. Raju Basnet to brigadier general. Col. Basnet has been charged for rights abuses during the 10-year Maoist insurgency. UN sent him home from a UN peace mission from a west African state; he was part of a Nepali UN peacekeeping team. Ropert Colville of OHCHR said in a statement from Geneva issued the objection. "We urge the government of Nepal to ensure that no further decisions regarding the extension in tenures and promotions of officials implicated in such cases are taken until the completion of full, transparent and impartial investigations," he said. OHCHR expressed serious concern even as it works with the major party in government that launched the 10-year insurgency and pardons dozens if its cadres for rights violations. Some were even appointed ministers and are moving around freely in the capital as police try to ’locate them’ as they hobnob with Maoist leadership under thenose of law enforcers. UN is silent. Nnnn
