POWER STRUGGLE TO HEAD ELECTION GOVT.
Kathmandu, 20 Sept.: The Big Three and ruling Madeshbadi parties are
now interlocked in a dispute over the leadership of an election government after Wednesday’s agreement to go for snap polls for a constituent assembly(CA).
There’s no constitutional provision for two assembly votes after parties
failed to promulgate a constitution even in four years although the people’s
mandate was to prepare a basic law in two years.
The Big Three and five ruling Madeshbadi parties of a front agreed Wednesday evening
to hold snap assembly polls to end a prolonged political and constitutional
deadlock.
A tussle between parties has begin on leadership of an elected government,
Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s suppoirters have made it clear the incumbent government will head a consensus government to hold elections amid
claims by main opposition NC to lead it.
“We were ready for a government of consensus under NC. But when there
was no agreement, an election government should be formed under
Baburamji. Without agreement, we won’t permit the snatching of the
reigns of government only,” Maoist spokesman Agni Sapkota said.
‘Consensus should be forged between all political parties to end the
current political stalemate,” Sharat Singh Bhandari, Chairman of National
Madesh Socialist Party said..
He charged the UCPN Maoist, NC, UML and Madeshi Morcha were
usurping power amid attempt to monopolize it.
Such monopolization won’t be acceptable, other Madeshi and Janajati
parties said.
‘Efforts to drive national politics by four won’t be acceptable,” the opposition said.
Intra-party talks are being held Thursday to dsicuss among other isues, an eection government and its leadership.
Fresh uncertainty has erupted after a decision to hold snap elections.
