PRESIDENT SAYS ‘ACHIEVEMENTS’ OF PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT BEING LOST Kathmandu, 10 Sept.: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has said that achievements of the people's movements are being lost due to lack of unity and cooperation among the political parties, RSS reports. Affixing the cancellation mark on the commemorative postage stamp featuring the image of the BP Museum Sundarijal issued by the Department of Postal Services on the 99th birth anniversary of BP Koirala today, the President recalled the Royal coup in 1960 resulted from differences between former prime ministers Matrika Prasad Koirala and BP Koirala and snatching away of democracy after 1990 resulted from the lack of unity between the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML). The President stressed the need of consensus and cooperation among the political parties to institutionalize the achievements of the people's movement- II. President Dr Yadav who was BP's personal doctor said BP had served eight years in jail for the sake of democracy, press freedom, human rights and periodic elections. On the occasion, Dr Yadav honoured former prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa, Nepali Congress former general secretary and central member Kul Bahadur Gurung and another former member Binay Dhwoj Chand in recognition of their contribution in the establishment of the museum. The government led by Thapa in 2054 BS had decided to transfer the ownership of the Sundarijal Jail to the BP Museum Infrastructure Committee from the then Royal Nepal Army. The then NC President Girija Prasad Koirala has inaugurated the Museum on Bhadau 24, 2061 BS.Receiving the felicitation, former PM Thapa said the seed of politics in Nepal was sown by BP Koirala. Museum Chairman Parshuram Pokhrel presented a proposal to the President requesting that BP be declared a national luminary.On the occasion, the President garlanded the statues of BP and Ganeshman Singh, observed the Museum and planted saplings on the premises of the museum.
