KOIRALA SAYS NEXT TWO DAYS CRUCIAL
Kathmandu, 23 Dec.: Nepali Congress top leaders today said they would go for a decisive movement if the ruling coalition did not agree to form a national consensus government under NC’s leadership, The Himalayan Times reports..
Addressing a mass meeting held in Thali, Danchhi
of Kathmandu, on the first day of its three-day national gathering of 240 regional presidents of the party he said the next two days would be the crucial to decide the nation’s future
polity.
“We want the political impasse to end before President Ram Baran Yadav’s
India visit beginning on Monday. And I say the next two days would be crucial to determine the nation’s future polity,” said NC President Sushil Koirala.
He said if the consensus could not be forged within few days, the NC would begin a decisive movement
to give the country an outlet. Stating that the prime ministerial position was not the big deal for him, Koirala said, “I will never compromise on the democratic norms and principles for the sake of prime ministerial position.”
Challenging the Unified CPN-Maoist for not to daydream to capture the state, Koirala said the victory of the democrats would be inevitable once they begin the movement.
Senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said that the consensus was elusive due to the PM’s adamant behaviour and added that Baburam Bhattarai should clear the way to end the political stalemate.
He said if the incumbent government continues to be rigid, the parties should oust it through a strong movement. Deuba said, “It will be the dishonor of the people’s mandate if we agreed on the contents of the new constitution before going to the fresh polls. If
we can agree on the contents, why should we go for fresh polls? Let’s promulgate the new constitution by
reviving the Constituent Assembly.”
Deuba, however, said the country could not backtrack from the fresh polls as the course of the elections was set out already.
Vice president Ramchandra Paudel said the Congress would wait for consensus for until next two days. “If consensus could not be forged by Monday, the regional presidents’ gathering would announce the course of movement, which would determine the country’s future,” he added.
General Secretary Krishna Sitaula said the consensus became elusive for last four days due to PM’s rigidity.
“The stringency of a person cannot keep the country in status quo situation and the nation will take a course in a natural manner,” he said.
Similarly, General Secretary Prakash Man Singh, treasurer Chitra Lekha Yadav, Central Working Committee members Bimalendra Nidhi, Sujata Koirala, Nepal Mahila Sangh Chairperson Dila Sangraula, Nepal Tarun Dal Chairman Udaya Sumsher Rana and Nepal Student Union Ranjit Karna said the peaceful movement was inevitable to protect the achievements of the change.
