NC ACCUSES MAOSITS OF HANGING ON TO GOVT. Kathmandu, 9 Dec.: As the UCPN (Maoist) floated another proposal in the three-party meeting regarding the leadership of national unity government and the contents of the new constitution, the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has accused the Maoists of prolonging its stay in power by putting one precondition after another, RSS reports. The meeting of the NC central working committee held at the party headquarters on Sunday concluded that the Maoist leaders´ attempt to forge consensus in constitution writing within four days that delayed the constitution writing for four years was the Maoist leaders´ ploy to prevent the elections to the constitution assembly (CA) by mid-May, NC leader Arjun Narsingh KC said. KC said the meeting discussed the ongoing discussions among the parties and measures to be adopted for the next CA elections by forging a consensus. The meeting also asked the committees formed under the party general secretaries to furnish the statutes of Nepal Women Association, Nepal Tarun Dal and Nepal Indigenous Nationalities Association with suggestions by mid-December. At the meeting, NC leaders Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Arjun Narsingh KC, Mahesh Acharya, Dr Minendra Rijal, Dr Prakash Saran Mahat and Dhan Raj Gurung, among others expressed their opinions. Nnnn REFERENDUM IF NO CONSENSUS SAYS CP MAINALI Kathmandu, 9 Dec : General Secretary of CPN-ML CP Mainali has proposed that referendum could be an alternative to navigate the present crisis if the parties failed to forge a consensus before the latest deadline set by the President, RSS reports from Bhaktapur. Speaking at an interaction organized by the Raphat Media Club here Sunday, General Secretary Mainali said the President need to announce referendum immediately if the parties miss the deadline. The foreign powers were using the present government as per their interests. "Incumbent government was so pliant that foreign forces could easily sign any agreement with it to serve their interests. So, they want to give continuity to this. But government has not stopped acting on foreign signal." According to him, protest was only alternative to sack this government and install the next for a consensus. He accused the UCPN-Maoist Chairman of steering the country towards conflict and crisis in stead of giving a political outlet.
