UML FORM WOMEN YOUTH FORCE

Karhmandu, 18 Aug.: The CPN-UML´s youth wing Youth Federation Nepal (YFN) formed Female Youth Force (FYF) at the organization´s national youth women´s convention held in Dharan Saturday amidst protests and boycott by a faction within the organization, Rohit Rai report in Repubica from Dharan..

The organization formed 75-member (FYF) at the gathering even as party chairman Jhalanath Khanal issued a circular to stop the gathering. Khanal issued the circular after rival factions ran parallel activities in the recent days.

YFN Vice-chairperson Niru Pal has been nominated as chief of the FYF while three other deputy chiefs are Anjali Adhikari, Saraswati Khadka and Shanta Rai. Balika Khadka has been nominated secretary. The Federation said that 61 of the total 75 districts have been represented in the FYF.

The YFN has announced to revive the dissolved Youth Force through the organization´s national gathering to be held in Chitwan after a month.

"Now all those involved in the violence against women, rapes and other injustice against women will be under FYF watch," YFN Chairman Mahesh Basnet announced at the gathering. He also said that the women organization was formed mainly for creating ground for UML´s victory in the upcoming elections.

Party chairman Khanal issued a circular to stop the gathering after sharp division between two YFN factions over forming FYF. Party vice chair Bidya Bhandari inaugurated the gathering.

"Formation of such organization has become necessary due to terror created by the Young Communist League of the UCPN (Maoist)," said Bhandari. "Now, FYF can retaliate against YCL´s highhandedness."

Stating that YFN is an autonomous wing of the party, Bhandari expressed her reservations over the party chairman´s issuance of circular to the youth wing.

"The party can only guide the sister wings in their overall policy issues but shouldn´t involve itself in the wing´s internal affairs," she said. Also, party secretary Shankar Pokharel criticized Khanal for issuing the circular.

Dissidents protest, boycott convention

The formation of the FYF was announced amidst a gathering that was boycotted by a faction of the YFN. Vice-chairpersons of the YFN Jhapat Rawal, Dil Kumari Pant and Surya Dhakal and Secretary Manju Yadav boycotted the convention.

The district committee of the YFN in Sunsari, where the event was organized, and the party district committee from the same district boycotted the convention. Only a group of members from the district committees, who were loyal to Oli faction, attended the event.

The situation turned tense at the venue after the district bodies decided to disrupt the gathering. The local administration deployed over 100 police to stop possible clash between the two sides.

A group of party members tore banners at the venue. The organizers shortened the planned two-day event to a day sensing possible clashes.
