Kathmandu, 10 April: There was heavy turnout at pooling booths in the capital when they opened for one-day constituent assembly elections at seven in the morning for a 10-hour vote.
Voting started immediately on schedule and men and women queued up in two lines to cast their ballots since six in the morning.
Chet Narayan Acharya of CPN-UML from Argakanchi withdrew from the vote hours before the vote citing threat from Maoists.
Reports from Gorkha and Dhading said Maoists were preventing voters from going to the polling centers threatening them with death if ballots are cast.
“A new day has begun,” PM Girija Prasad Koirala said after casting his ballot in Biratnagar.
“The end of monarchy has begun,” CPN-UML Gneral Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal said casting his vote in the capital.
“History is being made,” Chairman Prachanda said casting his vote in Bharatpur.
The atmosphere in Dang-1 where votes were being case; was tense ;seven Maoists were killed and more than one dozen were injured in firings by police protecting Khum Bahadur Khadha of Congress which didn’t cancel polls on the former home minister’s demand.
Agents of political parties were openly asking for votes inside pooling booths in Rajbiraj, radio reporters said.
