Maoists taking over with ballot power; Amrit Kumar Bohra takes over in CPN-UML
By Bhola B Rana
Kathmandu, April 13: Maoists are poised to takeover Singha Durbar with the power of the ballot helped by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, India, EU and USA.
With the pace in vote counting, the majority could emerge in the next two days.
Koirala and the international community helped Maoists seize power—a feat they couldn’t do with the barrel of the gun.
India has pushing a victory of Koirala’s Congress.
Chairman Prachanda, Dr Baburam Bhattarai Sunday congratulated Koirala for successfully holding constituent assembly elections and discussed a successor government with Koirala.
With the current counting trend, CPN (Maoist) will sweep elections for the 601-member constituent assembly elections with an absolute majority. It has already bagged 59 of the 112 declared seats and had a commanding lead in constituencies where vote counting continues.
Nepali Congress has bagged 20 seats and CPN-UML 18.
Following the result in the terai, Madesh Janaadkikar Forum is emerging as the largest party with nine seats so far ahead of NSP and Tarai Madesh Loktantrik party(TMLP).
Failure to forge has cost it dearly; CPN-UML met a similar fate for not forging an alliance with Maoists; Rajendra Mahoto has been elected.
Amrit Kumar Bohara has replaced Madhav Kumar Nepal as acting general secretary of CPN-UML after the party’s dismal failure and the standing committee decided to withdraw from government.
A place for Bohara is ensured in the assembly as he is in the party list of closed list of candidates; Bohara was replaced even as Jhalanath Khanal was elected from Ilam when the party was defeated humiliatingly.
Speaker Subash Newang and Pradip Geywali also survived but standing committee member and former deputy prime minister KP Sharma Oli was defeated.
Nepal resigned on moral grounds.
Maoists can get through their agenda with the absolute majority they are certain to gain in the assembly.
They can approve a resolution for a republic and a presidential system of government to install Prachanda as executive president through their majority.
But a central committee in a New Year 2065 congratulatory message to the people adopted a moderate political line.
It will push for a new Nepal for ‘peace , qualitative political change and speedy economic development’.
The question being asked is: Will Girija resign?
Amod Upadhaya, a member of the Koirala coterie after his victory in Morang said,” The mandate of the government was to conduct assembly elections which has been successfully completed.”
He called the decision of the CPN-UML to quit government as ‘hasty’ and added, ”There’s no moral commitment of government to resign.”
The statement is an indication Girija may not resign.
