Top Congress leader lashes out at UMNIM, Ian Martin

By Bhola B Rana

Kathmandu, 10 Nov: Top main opposition leader and former home minister Govinda Raj Joshi lashed out at UNMMIN and its Chief Ian Martin at a time when the UN mission’s mandate expires 23 January 2009.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sought its extension during a Nepal visit this month.
“We believed at the beginning UMNIM would play an independent role to take the peace process to its logical end and help conduct free elections. But, UMNNIM didn’t fulfill both roles.
“UNMIN went to people targeted against it by Maoists and incited them. It didn’t go [during 10 April CA election] to electoral constituencies of candidates who promoted Maoists Monitoring should have been done at places.
“UNMIN stayed throughout the day in my constituency and incited voters against me. They didn’t visit Ram Chandra Paudel’s neighbouring constituency; he is a prominent leader,” Joshi said.
Asked by Nepal newsmagazine why it took so long for the party to expose UNMIN, Joshi said,” We knew this immediately. But unified Congress came to the realize this only after the vote. Everybody known our party is split vertically. Even now there’s a big influence of Maoists in our party. Maoists still run our party.”
Joshi charged UNMIN Chief Ian Martin for being a communist.
