Six dead, 34 missing in bus accident (BREAKING NEWS)

Kathmandu, 10 Sept. Bodies of six among 40 persons missing when a bus fell into a river near Balephi, Sindhupalchok, have been recovered Thursday morning.
Rescuers said others are trapped in the bus which was heading for the capital from Jalbire.

New army chief fought Maoists in far-West

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: New Army Chief Gen Chatraman Singh Gurung who took charge of Nepal Army Wednesday planned and led counter-insurgency operations during the 10-year people’s war in the far-West
where Maoists were strongest.
Gen Gurung will lead the Nepal Army for the next three years.
Born in Tanahu on 18 July 1952, Gurung, graduated from Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun, India, and joined Royal Nepal Army in 1971.
He completed staff college from the Command and General Staff College, Leavenworth, USA, and also attended the National Defence University, China.
Gen Gurung holds a bachelors degree from Tribhuvan University,
He is a paratrooper and has completed several professional courses at home in mountain warfare; has completed commando and jungle warfare courses in India.
The new army chief served as operations staff officer, chief military personnel officer and chief of staff in UNFIL, Lebanon.
Gurung succeeded Gen Rukmangud Katawal.

Bomb planted at home of CPN-UML leader

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: A powerful bomb was discovered Thursday at the home of CPN-UML leader Gobinda Thapa in Jhapa.
The family immediately vacated the home as fear griped the neighbourhood.
It wasn’t known who planted the bomb.
A bomb disposal unit of Nepal Army arrived immediately at the site.

Salaries of president, prime minister hiked

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: The salaries of the president and the prime minister have been hiked by the cabinet by the cabinet 2 September.
The president will get a monthly allowance of Rs 72,800 after a hike of Rs 2,080; the prime minister’s salary has been hiked from Rs 35,500 to Rs 36,920 per month.
Salaries of political leaders in government and parliament were also increased.

Facility for wife of communication minister

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Nepal Telecom has provided a NGO run by wife of Communication Minister Shanker Pokhrel nearly Rs 500,000 and eight telephones free, Naya Patrika reports.
The ministry extended the facility despite protests from members of the Telecom board.

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Chairman Prachanda Wednesday called on ailing Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala.
They held political discussions for nearly one hour.
Koirala is recovering from urine infection.

ADB withdrawn from transmission line project

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Asian Development Bank (ADB) has withdrawn from the 200km Tanakpur/Kohalpur transmission line project to import electricity from India, Kantipur reports.
The transmission line runs through two national parks and a protected area.
ADB said it isn’t financing the project without a study on environment impact and effect on society.
Government plan to minimize impact of load-shedding will receive a setback.

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: A 24-member delegation of FNCCI flew for Bhutan Wednesday to attend the 9th SAARC trade fair in Thimpu from 11 to 14 September.

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Nepal Business Bank Ltd has received permission from Nepal Rashtra Bank to operate as the country’s 27th commercial bank.
The bank with a paid-up capital of Rs 2.3 billion has 1,228 promoters.

NDF meeting uncertain

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: A meeting of the Nepal Development Forum (NDF) is uncertain, Annapurna Post reports.
Meetings are held once every two years,
Government has concluded a meeting is meaningless with continuing political uncertainty.
Meetings haven’t been held since 2004 because of political instability.
