At last 28 persons killed by landslides in far-West hill districts

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: A retreating monsoon has claimed at last 28 lives in four hill districts in the far-West, fresh reports from the region said Tuesday.
Landslides killed 13 persons in Accham at 10 in the morning Tuesday as 500 persons have been displaced and more than five dozen homes threatened.
Twelve members of two families were killed in Dandeldhura, two in Bhajang, including a child, and one in Baitadi.
Three days of incessant rains for have left behind a trail of death and destruction in other hill districts and the terai in the south bordering India.
A hydro power plant was damaged in one district.
Meteorologists predict monsoon will continue Wednesday and Thursday.
Floods have killed one person in the south in the region where rising rivers have destroyed standing crops as well.

Maoists up ante

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Chairman Prachanda Tuesday has demanded a ‘joint national government’ led by Maoists in a ‘package deal’ to lend a four-month political deadlock which will create a national financial and political crisis without a resolution.
The Maoist supreme upped the ante one day before parliament meets Wednesday at three in the afternoon after a three-week dasain recess.
Maoists have been obstructing parliamentary proceedings.
Prachanda threatened ‘a real movement’ if his party’s demands aren’t conceded
“If Maoists don’t have a right to lead a government, who has?” he asked.
Maoists had previously only been demanding what they called a correction of presidential action to retain sacked Army Chief Gen Rukmangud Katawal.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal attempted o present a rosy picture when he said ‘there were indications of an agreement’ after his meeting this week with Prachanda.
But he rejected Maoist demand for the discussion of a censure motion against the president in parliament—another Maoist demand.

Recommendation to terminate membership of two Maoist rebel legislators; with correction of previous report

Kathmandu, 6 Oct: Besides Matrika Prasad Yadav, a parliamentary sub-committee Tuesday recommended the membership of lawmaker Jagat Yadav also be cancelled.
They rebelled from UCPN (Maoist) and formed their own party while also boycotting parliament sessions.
A recommendation was made by a sub-committee headed by Pushpa Bhusal of Nepali Congress and not a Maoist woman legislator as reported earlier.
Meanwhile, Matrika Yadav revealed in Dhankuta Tuesday his party had completed preparations to launch a people’s wart without specifying when.
