Mohan Baidya Kiran says HLPM not Maoist priority

By Bhola B Rana

Kathmandu, 6 Dec: Mohan Baidya Kiran, second-ranking Maoist leader, said a high-level political mechanism [HLPM] pushed mainly by Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala is not a Maoist priority and hasn’t been discussed in the main opposition formally.
Baidya said this even as Chairman Prachanda has been saying it will be formed soon after several rounds of discussions with Koirala.
“Officially, the UCPN-Maoist has not taken any decision about forming such mechanism nor has it allowed Girijababu to head it.
“Who is talking about this outside the party? I have not any information about this.
“.. the Maoists have not taken formal decision about this [forming HLPM]. Leaders may talk on such issues during their courtesy meeting with others. Forming a mechanism is not our party’s agenda. It will be better to take such talks just for the sake of political goodwill,” Kiran told The Rising Nepal Sunday,
Kiram said the HLPM is not necessary now.
“It is not necessary now. Firstly, the president’s move must be corrected. Secondly, civilian supremacy should be revived in the country. Only then can we talk of a mechanism.
“.. the issue of forming the high-level political mechanism is only for killing times,” he added.
Other parties and UN have been pushing the mechanism to break the impasse and draft a constitution within the 28 May 2010 deadline.
