Govt. preparing to close down OHCHR regional offices
Kathmandu, 14 May: Government is preparing to close down the regional offices of OHCHR, Kantipur reports.
A formal decision will be taken by the government soon, according to cabinet sources.
But OHCHR reacted by saying the closure of regional offices without the completion of the peace process won’t be in Nepal’s interest.
“We’re for keeping it (OHCHR) only in Kathmandu. Now there’s no need for it outside,” Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala said.
“I feel the government won’t close our offices whatever decision the Congress has taken because it’s in the interest of Nepal,” OHCHR Chief Richard Bennet said.
Meanwhile, UN security council Wednesday asked UNMIN to “immediately begin to make arrangements for its withdrawal, including handing over any residual monitoring responsibility by 15 September 2010.”
The council extended the mandate Saturday until 15 September.
