Kathmandu, 2 July: Nepali Congress (NC) Acting President Sushil Koirala said his party will lead the next government immediately after landing at Tribhuvan International Airport abruptly cutting short visits to USA and several European countries.
He said Maoists can’t lead a successor government of Madhav Kumar Nepal who resigned Wednesday as the main opposition didn’t gain the confidence of parties during the nine-month rule of the Prachanda-led government in 2009.
Koirala cut short his foreign tour following the sudden resignation of Nepal changing the political scenario.
The NC acting president made it clear Ram Chandra Paudel, as leader of the NC parliamentary party (PP) leader, is his candidate to lead a government.
Koirala said in a parliamentary system the leader of the PP heads the government.
Sher Bahadur Deuba has also staked a claim to lead the next government.
UML Thursday also claimed the leadership of the new government as the party standing committee decided a national unity under Maoists can be formed only if the UCPN (Maoists) meets past commitments.
Maoists are unlikely to meet demands for the immediate return of seized a assets and dissolve the paramilitary YCL.
Chairman Jhalanath Khanal, who this week was admitted to a hospital for tests following chest, chaired the meet after discharge.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav Thursday gave political parties one week’s time to assembly a national consensus government.
NC and UML, ignoring the president’s appeal, are pushing for a government with majority support in parliament.
